February Celebrations

February is the only month that we have NO birthday celebrations. (Well, my SIL does have a birthday, sorry, Bev, but I guess I'm thinking of kids and grandkids ; )

And, of course, speaking of February celebrations, we all know that February 14 is Valentine's Day. I'm participating in The Valentine's Day Blog Re-Design Giveaway being hosted by magirk. I would love to win because my blog is so boring looking, it could definitely use some sprucing up ; ) If you would like to participate, go over to her blog and leave a comment (the deadline is Feb. 7th at midnight)--heck, if everyone keeps leaving comments over there that will cut down my chances to win, won't it??? Oh well, that's o.k. I'd be thrilled if someone I knew won anyway!!!

As part of the giveaway, I was to write about Valentines Day. For my sisters and I, Valentines Day has a special meaning. On February 14, 1965, we went to live with the couple who raised us after our parents died. What a special couple they were--you just don't find many people willing to open their home and their hearts to 6 teenage girls (who they didn't know). Not only that, but they even remodeled their home--adding an addition just to accommodate the additional people. We always had a special celebration with them each year. Helen died in 1979 and Les died in 1999. My younger kids never knew Helen, but to each of them Les was always "Grandpa Les". I know I've mentioned this story before, but it's still one that my sisters and I get a chuckle out of. One day I was talking about Les, and Kyle said, "Wait a minute, you mean his name was "Les". I said yes and he said, "I always thought we just called him Grandpa "Less", because he wasn't really my Grandpa". I guess if he was he would have been his "actual" Grandpa we would have called him Grandpa More????

Needless to say, I always celebrate with the love of my life. This is one of my favorite pictures of him. I will do a whole post about him on Valentines Day.

As far as other February celebrations, at the end of the month, our son, Stephen, and his beautiful wife, Daphne, will celebrate their 20th anniversary.

almost 20 years and 5 kids later

Sidenote #1: I have received some wonderful awards and will pass them on tomorrow.

Sidenote #2: I also have a question--does anyone ever come back and read the comments that I leave on the comments you leave? (Hope that makes sense) I'm just curious--not that I'm telling you to do it or anything.

Sounds like a fun contest.

I think it's wonderful that you had 2 people willing to step up like that when you needed them.

I didn't know that you left comments on my comments. I'll have to start checking :o)

P.S. Woohoo, I'm first.

I am guilty of not coming back and reading responses to comments...I just don't think about it.

I was so TOUCHED by the story of your adopted parents...My husband and I really have a desire to do something to ease the burden of children who need a home...We hope to participate in some kind of foster to adopt in the future.

I may go and check out the contest, but I am a control freak and don't want someone else redesigning my blog.

Wow- Valentines day sure is special for you. My ex moved out on Valentines day. LOL!!

I try to come back to read your replies to my comments, but on most days it gets too hectic. If I asked a question I make sure to come back.

That's an amazing story, Yvonne! I can't imagine taking in 6 teenage girls. Sometimes I can't imagine just keeping the 3 I have.

I usually forget to read replies, although sometimes I do.

What true life hero's you were blessed with!

Ha! Grandpa "less"

Congrat's on almost 20 to your son and DIL!

I sometimes come back, but not alway:)

That is such an amazing story about your adoptive parents taking in your family. Wow! Very special people.

Have a great day! :D

It is a really great contest.

It is so funny to see things from a child's perspective. Grandpa Less, too funny.

I usually click on follow up comments just so I can read yours. So, I do read them but I get them on my email.

I hope you win the contest!!!
That's so cool of your adopted parents, that takes some strong people to willingly just open up to 6 total strangers, but I know it didn't just bless your guys' lives, I know it blessed theirs too.
You've got yourself a handsome hubby!!!
I love the wedding dress. That train is amazing!!! :)

Ok. Maybe I'm a softy, but I started to cry when you mentioned your parents died and a couple took in 6 teenage girls... whom they didn't know. ~maybe if you ever up to it, I'd love to hear about that part of your life-- not to bring in the pain of losing your parents --but about your transition and the couple that took you in.

I hope you win the contest. You are very deserving.

I usually pop back in at some point to see what you've written back, but sometimes I forget. :)

Magirk said...

What a wonderful post! I cried. :)

Thanks for taking the assignment seriously. Most people just posted a link to my site, and didn't even mention Valentine's Day on their blog.

I do come back and check your 'later' comments. I didn't know you did that, when I first started reading. But I happened to come back to see what others were writing, and saw your responses. I think it's great! :)

You're so thoughtful to go the extra mile like that.

A beautiful post Yvonne. You are blessed! I sometimes come back and read comments, but most if the time I just don't think about it. :( I'm sorry!

Yvonne said...

TO EVERYONE--I was just curious about reading the comments--not asking everyone to come back. I enjoy doing it, but I just didn't know if people came back. ABSOLUTELY NO PRESSURE to come back.

annie said...

I usually look at the post below your new one to see your follow up comments. I love that you do that!

I love valentine's day!!

I come back and read your comment replies :)

What a great story! You always have such heart warming posts.

Thank you for all of the sweet comments yesterday! Me and Ted read my comments at the end of the day and he said, "That Yvonne lady sounds sweet" haha.

I'm a real control freak, too, so this participating was hard, but I would love a different look.

You know I do comment on the comments because you did that--you have been such a great example.

I am still laughing at the Grandpa Les thing that is too funny!

I love that Helen and Les opened their arms and their hearts to you and your sisters on Valentine's Day! :)

I ♥ the story of Grandpa "Less"...I had forgotten it, and it's just as funny the second time! :D

That's such a handsome picture of your sweetheart, and beautiful pictures of Stephen and Daphne! :)

I ALWAYS come back and read your comments back on the comments you've received...I love it! I've done some of that myself just lately...not that I'm telling you to check or anything, haha! ;)

I love February, Valentines Day being one of my favorite holidays, probably because it's predominately red and red is my favorite color. It's also my birthday month!

What a touching story about your adoptive parents...6 teenagers, wow. Having just had a run in with one of mine, I am in awe of them! What a wonderful couple.

I'm on my way to check out that giveaway...
